Meet our Berkeley High student interns!
Meet Sol Valencia Topete!
She joined our project this past year because she wanted to be more active in her community. She's 16 years old and has lived in South Berkeley all of her life. So far she's enjoyed learning about new terms and ideas that she had never heard of before.
Her ultimate vision for the SFROW is a place where she can hang out with friends and gather with her community. Her work at MSBF and passion for environmental equity is motivated by the current threat of climate change.
Outside of school she loves gaming, arts and crafts, and gardening with her mom. Strawberries and dragon fruit are some of her favorite snacks. "I would encourage others to join this project because you're getting paid to do something amazing for your community AND have fun" - Sol (:

Daniel Finis Perez is a Berkeley High junior that has been with our project for over 2 years! He was interested in Moving South Berkeley Forward because it had to do with the betterment of his community. Daniel and his family have lived in South Berkeley for around 12 years. "Being introduced to the issue of there being a lack of health amenities in my community shocked me as I had no idea, making me realize how important this project is and how it can really make a difference for our community."
His ultimate vision for the SFROW is its development into a beautiful green space where people can have access to health resources, environmental education, community gardens, playgrounds, and a place to gather around to just enjoy the environment they are in. His work here is motivated by the racial health disparities that are evident in his community.
Daniel shares a hobby for gardening with many members of his family. Outside of school he really enjoys being outdoors- playing sports like basketball and soccer, biking, going on hikes, and hanging with friends. On chill days however he likes just sitting somewhere comfortable watching movies or shows. His top three favorite fruits are oranges, mangoes, and bananas.
"The time and energy I put in to this project contributes to the improvement of many thousands of lives of South Berkeley residents."
